What works for me is, once I alt tab back into Youtube and space stops working to pause the video, I just press Tab a few times to highlight the pause button on the player. it then continues to work with spacebar even when I alt tab back and forth, at least for me.

If you clicked the video, the play/pause button again or just the background of the page, it would reset to spacebar focusing play/pause for the video. Right now, it seems if I click the background to reset the focus, it just makes spacebar scroll down the page.
