If it will compress less, you need a taller ring. If it will compress more, consider getting one with a flange to limit wax extrusion into the drainage path.

By the time you get the wax ring out of the packaging you may as well be the wax ring yourself, your hands pants and body are covered with wax. We've been using a new product called Sani Seal. Really sweet and very reliable. See their web site and videos. Sure each ring is $12, but the toilet seal is worth every penny/dollar.

Though fairly easy to replace, I would not suggest doing it yourself unless you own your own home. Condominiums and apartments likely have specific requirements for plumbing. However, if you see the stain inside the toilet, it's not leakage from below.

It's not a matter of age, but the fact that a wax ring is intended to be a single-use item. They squish into place when you set a toilet, and that can't happen very well more than once.

Feb 9, 2022 · The toilet worked perfectly fine before until I noticed a little leak at bottom of toilet. I replaced the worn out wax ring. There are no more leaks but this time the water overflows and just won't have that swirling flush! Very slooow drain. There's no blockage, no leaks and I even replaced the wax ring a second time, just in case.

I would recommend against using 2 wax rings due to the increased possibility of leaks. Short of hiring a plumber to raise the flange, there are products like this that allow you to raise the flange and still follow building codes.

Sep 15, 2015 · In particular, the floor was probably just wood under tile (ie, no vapor barrier), though we haven't de-tiled to verify. However, looking at the toilet's drain lets us see it. The toilet leaks around the O-Ring about every four to six months; we've replaced it 5 or 6 times since we moved in (3 years ago). We're getting a bit tired of doing that.
