Union county was formed, by an 1842 act of the NC General Assembly, it was determined that a county seat would be located within two miles of the center of the county, and would be named in honor of President James Monroe. The town of Monroe was incorporated on December 24, 1844.

Directions to Monroe City Hall. 300 West Crowell Street, Monroe NC 28112 704-282-4500. From the North. Take Exit 58 (US 601 South) from I-85. Follow U.S. 601 South through Concord. Stay on U.S. 601 until you cross U.S. 74 in Monroe (Approximately 45 minutes from the I-85 exit) and continue straight into town (Road name becomes Skyway Drive).
