Any disadvantages of saddle valve for appliance water line?
Dec 11, 2022 · It is a misnomer called saddle valve but it is not meant to be used as a valve. It is to be used as one time pipe penetration and not to be turned anymore. For the bottom kind which is a real valve I suggest you use shark bite connection types. There is no soldering involved. To be clear, the saddle valve is not a valve.

If you want to cap that fitting you need to purchase a cap for the 1/4" OD compression fitting. One thing to remember, not only can the valve leak but the rubber washer that seals the saddle to copper tubing will harden with time and could also fail.

Leaking out of the actual supply, then get a 1/4" compression cap and use tefflon tape. +1 because the question is Getting rid of an old saddle valve which is a no if it doesn't leak. If water is still coming out after turning off the valve, the valve needs to be repaired or replaced. It's possible that there is some debris or hard water deposit in the valve that is preventing it from sealing and cleaning the valve will do the trick, but a new saddle valve is so inexpensive ($15 or less) it really isn't worth any time diagnosing it; I would just replace it.

You can get away with using a saddle valve.. if you never actually use it as a valve. Basically, use the saddle valve but put a better valve downstream. In your case, you can use a 1/4" or 3/8" (I can't tell from the photo) compression valve on the flexible copper tubing -- assuming you can get water to come out of the saddle valve.
