May 11, 2016 · @SteveJessop: That is for a large part because of a lack of context. If you're offered a clear favor, above what's reasonable to expect, then appreciation is not at all sarcastic. If however the offer is just meeting basic expectations, "appreciation" is sarcastic precisely because it's you're responding as if it were a favor.
