Aug 12, 2016 · This fix worked: Go to Western Digital and download the update file. Unplug all USB devices except mouse, keyboard and My Passport drive. Ensure the WD Passport drive is connected to the back of your computer, not a USB 3.0 port, but a backward compatible USB port with the same cable that came with the drive.

Windows 11 won’t work with my WD External Hard Drive
Jan 9, 2023 · My Amazon Basics 3TB external drive works fine on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Probably not quite as old as the WD unit but, as I recall, less expensive. My backup going forward is a two-drive docking station. It took around 5 minutes to see the hard drive I put in it. Once found it seems to work without delay.

Connect the hard drive to your Surface Pro X and format it using the FAT32 file system.
