Both shorebirds are federally listed as threatened. In the state of Maryland, the piping plover is listed as endangered; Assateague Island is the only breeding site in Maryland for piping plovers. Increasing survey efforts into the fall (including November) has also likely contributed to the greater number of red knots seen in recent years.
