Histology of basal cell carcinoma The key feature of basal cell carcinoma at low power magnification is of a basaloid epithelial tumour arising from the epidermis (figure 1). The basaloid epithelium typically forms a palisade with a cleft forming from the adjacent tumour stroma (figure 2).
There is no accord of views regarding the type of basosquamous carcinoma. This type is most frequently described as the simultaneous presence of basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma (1,3,5,13,14); some authors report further items, keratotic car-cinoma (3,5,14) and metatypical carcinoma (5,12).

Cytoplasm may be inconspicuous, pale, or lightly eosinophilic. Mitoses and single-cell apoptoses are usually present and may be prominent.
