Jun 18, 2006 · I had the same problem. I followed the Joy of Cooking recipe to the letter (half of the gingerbread house recipe), and it was still too dry to knead out on the counter. After checking a few online recipes, I noticed that one had a quarter cup of coffee, so I added 2 tablespoons of water, and it came together nicely.

Just slice them off with a serrated blade. As to your template size, it totally depends on what size house you want. I would suggest a footprint for the house of no more than 10"X6".

The only concern I would have is the volume of batter going into the pan. It might be a little on the thin side. If so, I would double the recipe and bake in a slightly larger pan.
