They've said they're redoing UI elements for Stormblood (after dropping PS3 support), so at this point we're in the "Please look forward to it" stage. Add-ons, no. Based off of reused code and assets from XIV 1.0, which probably date back close to a decade at this point.

You're right though most people play FFXIV for the story, community and side activities not to push endgame progression or pvp. If you want that WoW's your game. I literally only play FFXIV for the story because I find the gameplay unpalatable.
