A genetically modified sugar beet is a sugar beet that has been genetically engineered by the direct modification of its genome using biotechnology. Commercialized GM sugar beets make use of a glyphosate -resistance modification developed by Monsanto and KWS Saat.

Sugar is still GMO free. Every sugar beet processing factory in North America has been independently tested by Eurofins and the sugar contains no trace of the GM trait: DNA or protein. Those components are naturally chewed up during the refining process.

A genetically engineered sugar beet has enhanced characteristics for weed, insect and disease control, along with benefits to the environment. And, all genetic material is removed from the sugar during the beet sugar extraction process well before the sugar gets to the food supply.

Sugar beets are genetically modified using a variety of techniques, including gene editing, genetic engineering, and marker-assisted selection. Genes Inserted Genes are inserted into sugar beets that make them resistant to certain pests and diseases, or increase their sugar content.
