I just got done doing one of the available Steam Deck shell swaps, and I have some advice for anyone that is considering buying a kit from one of the current sellers. Some of this advice is specific to extremrate, but most of it will apply to either.

Successfully did a shell swap on my deck! I’ve never done a shell swap or fixed any device, and this was my first one I’ve ever did. I figured, I’ve built a pc, it shouldn’t be that bad. And honestly it wasn’t. It was pretty easy for the most part.

It’s not so bad if you can afford to set aside a couple of hours, follow a YouTube guide from Extremerate, and just take your time. I’ve done a couple of shell swaps between the switch and steamdeck. Hardest part is getting the damn screens off. Slow and steady is key

Dec 8, 2023 · Just reassemble your Steam Deck and use it as is for now. 3rd party manufacturers will certainly make replacement shells for the OLED version soon enough; and by then you’ll likely have another iFixit guide for how to properly do the replacement.
