Island und die Europäische Union sind unter anderem durch die Mitgliedschaft Islands im Europäischen Wirtschaftsraum und die Teilnahme am Schengen-Raum eng miteinander verbunden. Island war von 2010 bis 2015 Beitrittskandidat der Europäischen Union .

Die Beitrittsverhandlungen zwischen der EU und Island wurden im Juli 2010 aufgenommen. Auf Antrag Islands wurden die Beitrittsverhandlungen im Dezember 2013 ausgesetzt. Im März 2015 beantragte Island, nicht als EU-Bewerberland zu gelten, was der Rat zur Kenntnis nahm.

Die Kommission kommt zu dem Schluss, dass Island die Prinzipien und Werte der EU auf politischer Ebene achtet und empfiehlt die Aufnahme von Beitrittsverhandlungen. Infolge der internationalen Finanzkrise muss Island jedoch seine wirtschaftliche Lage stabilisieren.
