Feb 14, 2015 · In the end I bought some 2x2 drywall squares (would have been cheaper to buy a whole sheet), and liquid nailed them to the back of the drop ceiling tiles, then cut the holes out with a rotary tool. It worked out great, is very sturdy and makes the sound fuller. May still add backer boxes, Monoprice has a decent one with external speaker connectors.

I'm trying to think of a way that I could anchor the speaker to the drywall and wood stud drywall framing around the HVAC dropdown instead, and leave the ceiling unmolested.

The front wave and back wave are, by definition, out-of-phase with each other, so unless they are separated, the front wave will cancel the back wave, and the result will be no sound.
