I know that Iltis Oxhead does theirs, and whomever makes the axes for Best Made Co. offer a VARIETY of painted handles to choose from (in different named themes, no less). Thoughts on the whole thing?

Nov 12, 2014 — I have done some axe painting in the past. I think it adds a nice touch. Especially a combination of od green and fire engine red! It especially nice when you have a bunch of axes around. Adds some interest to them. I usually use some kind of spray paint. A few weeks back I was undercoating my wife's truck.

Mar 22, 2012 — I did my first stained axe handle today after work. Did not take long. I uses a water based stain used for leather. Works very well with wood as well. I went with dark Mahogany color. The reason why I went with this color is that I have come across many old axes with this color stained handles.

Feb 12, 2024 — Many of the vintage axes shown were originally painted, most often red or blue, etc. I find the vinegar soak or Evaporust brings out a nice patina while removing the rust. I then wire brush and oil and wax the cleaned axe head as is, without blueing. I’m refurbing some nicer axes for sale which feature my leather masks and premium handles.

Oregon. Nov 9, 2017. #1. This is a Vintage Genuine Norlund Hudson Bay style "Tomahawk" Axe, with original hickory handle. The original handles had the "fawn's foot" swell as the bottom picture shows. The hickory has some rich dark grain patterns in the wood, very unique. The handle is 27". It comes with a leather mask and neck guard made by me.

New Mexico. Mar 15, 2024. #1. Trying my luck with my own design axe handles. I work in a shop full of WW2 machines. No CNC and no copy lathe (yet). These blanks were done on double spindle shapers using 4 patterns and 4 passes in straight cutters. 2 axis and round cutters. Ash, Hickory and Karri wood.
