Using TXD1/RXD1 on ATmega1280 for USB communication
Apr 2, 2018 · Would it be possible to hook up an external 8u2 (or similar) chip programmed as a USB to serial converter (something like this) and use it as if it were the normal USB port (e.g. for uploading firmware)? (I wanted to add atmega1280 as a tag, but it doesn't seem to exist)

Feb 25, 2010 · I have been using my USBtinyISP to program ATmega1280 and ATmega2560 chips for several months now with no problems (other than those which were self-induced). I just tried burning the Arduino Mega bootloader to a Seeeduino Mega board (bootloader previously erased) using version 18 of the Arduino IDE.

Nov 8, 2010 · To program the bootloader into the Atmega1280/2560 you will need to use an ICSP or Parallel programmer. The ICSP is the easiest way. You can either bring out a 6 pin header (2x3) that is similar to the ICSP headers on the standard Arduinos or just connect a programmer to the correct pins.

Aug 9, 2010 · After applying the 0018 fix ( #ifdefs around usbInit and usbPoll in usbdrv.h), I tried the UsbKeyboardDemo1 sketch on a Diecimila clone (Seeeduino v2.12) and an ArduinoMega clone (Seeeduino Mega v1.1). The sketch compiles and uploads fine, but both devices won't do anything with the code in place.
