New head coach Ruben Amorim says he “truly believes” in Manchester United’s squad and that he is the right man to take the club back to the top. The 39-year-old former Sporting Lisbon boss was named as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor at the beginning of November and is gearing up for his first match in charge at Ipswich on Sunday.

Speaking to Gary Neville, the 39-year-old described how difficult it was to leave Sporting Lisbon in the middle of the season but maintained that the moment was “perfect” for him. Amorim is United’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 having masterminded the club’s 20th top-flight title.
