Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is looking to lock down the votes to pass his stopgap funding bill and avert a government shutdown by Friday’s deadline, as he works to keep the lights on in Washington during the beginning weeks of President Trump’s second term.

The stopgap measure would keep the government funded through Sept. 30. But Democratic leaders are opposed, and it’s unclear if Johnson can pass it with only Republicans.

House GOP leaders on Saturday unveiled a stopgap funding bill, known as a continuing resolution, that will fund the government at current levels through September 2025.

The proposal would fund the government through September, and mostly maintain levels of spending passed during the last administration.
