The Vancouver Whitecaps got a late goal from Belal Halbouni to earn a 1-1 draw with CF Monterrey Wednesday night in the opening match of their CONCACAF Champions Cup series.

Canadian international midfielder Jayden Nelson recorded a goal and three assists as the Whitecaps trounced the Portland Timbers on Sunday.

The Whitecaps were dealt a scare with a 2-1 defeat at Saprissa in Leg 1 of their Round One series, but it's been an otherwise excellent start under new head coach Jesper Sørensen. Vancouver got the job done with a 2-0 home victory in Leg 2 to secure a place in the Round of 16.

Vancouver beat Saprissa 2-0 at home last Thursday to win the two-legged aggregate series 3-2 and advance to the round of 16. The Whitecaps will kick off a two-legged set against LIGA MX club CF Monterrey at B.C. Place on Wednesday. The second game goes March 12 in Mexico.

In a battle of former Concacaf Champions Cup winners, Seattle Sounders FC and Cruz Azul played to a 0-0 draw, while Vancouver Whitecaps FC rallied for a 1-1 draw against CF Monterrey and the LA Galaxy dropped a 1-0 decision at CS Herediano as Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 action continued Wednesday night.
