Awarded in response to historic flooding in 2023, funds will be used to repair or replace failing alley sewer lines, a major cause of basement backups.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Detroit and surrounding communities funding through its community block grant program for disaster recovery.

Some major assistance from the federal government will soon help the city of Detroit address some infrastructure problems and much needed repairs to its old sewer lines.

The federal government is sending $460.8 million in disaster recovery and prevention funds to Michigan, Wayne County and Detroit.

Nearly $347 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is coming to Detroit after flooding in the city in August of 2023. In a press conference Wednesday morning,

"We’ve got a sewer system built to handle 4 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, which was great for the 20th Century," said Mayor Mike Duggan.
