You may have seen a new photo file format on the rise, Google's own WebP. Here's how the format works, what it's good for, and everything else you should know.
WebP was developed by Google to replace the outdated JPG, PNG, and GIF formats and is said to be technically superior to all three. The format supports both lossless and lossy compression.
In the case of WebP, there is even a bigger size reduction: lossless WebP is about 25% smaller than the PNG, and its lossy version can be up to 35% smaller than the widely popular JPEG.
