Mount Spurr in Alaska – rising some 3,370 meters or 11,070 feet above sea level  – could be about to erupt, with the number of small and recent earthquakes in the area now into the thousands.

A volcano near Alaska’s most populous city may be preparing to erupt, according to experts who have been monitoring the situation.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory is closely monitoring Mount Spurr, which is located about 75 miles west of Anchorage. “AVO continues to monitor activity at Mount Spurr for signals that would indicate that the volcano is moving closer to an eruption.

Mount Spurr, a towering snow-capped stratovolcano in Alaska, has long been a source of scientific intrigue, but recent events have sparked serious concerns. The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has been closely monitoring an increase in seismic activity around the volcano since April 2024.
