The gray seal, named “Chappy,” was admitted to the Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Clinic on Feb. 16 after being discovered near the downtown of New Haven, Connecticut. While he was initially recovering from dehydration, malnutrition, and mild pneumonia, he eventually succumbed to gastrointestinal issues.

Chappy, the underweight gray seal pup who was found on its stomach on a street in New Haven, Conn., last month, drawing nationwide attention and local police affection, has died, the aquarium that was caring for him announced Monday.
