Xcel Energy’s Sherco Solar Project is in Clear Lake, near the utility’s Sherco coal-fired generating station, the state’s largest power plant. Xcel previously retired one coal unit at the plant and plans to decommission the other two by 2030, marking its full exit from burning coal.

It’s all thanks to Xcel Energy’s new Sherco Solar Plant, which has powered up in Clear Lake. “Carbon-free electricity from Sherco is officially flowing from this site today,” declared Bob Frenzel, Xcel’s chair, president and CEO. “When we are done, Sherco could stand as the largest coal plant redevelopment in the nation.”

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Xcel Energy is now delivering carbon-free electricity to customers across the upper midwest. Sherco Solar’s initial connection to the upper midwest grid was in late October, serving customers with more than 220 megawatts of low-cost power, with two additional connection phases expected to come online in 2025 and 2026.
