Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc., was formed in January 1949, and production was soon underway for the fledgling company’s sole product, a .22-cal. pistol designed by company co-founder, William B. Ruger.

William B. Ruger, a flinty entrepreneur who turned a childhood fascination with guns into the nation’s largest firearms manufacturing company, died Saturday at his home in Prescott, Ariz.

He became chairman and CEO upon William B. Ruger Sr.’s retirement in 2000. Bill officially retired from the Company in February of 2006. BIll Ruger Jr. was born in Greensboro, N.C., in 1939.
