When combined with other vowels or consonants, they can then make a completely different sound. Here are some examples to help you to pronounce French words correctly. Try practising them out loud.
ar (ahr) as in "Carl" [KARL] or "Barbier" [bar-beeay]. Where the ar pronunciation is modified to other vowel sounds, these sounds are indicated; e.g., "Carrad" [KAR-rudd] and "Richard" [RIH-churd].
