Massive, wind-whipped brush fires are raging across parts of Long Island's Pine Barrens region on Saturday, prompting a large emergency response to control the blazes that led to a local State of Emergency in the town of Southampton in Suffolk County.

Numerous fires are burning along Sunrise Highway on Saturday afternoon, according to the Eastport Fire Department. A smoke cloud drifting southeast was visible for miles. Fire trucks from Wading River and Medford were spotted heading toward the fire. And a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter was seen flying overhead.

A large brush fire broke out Saturday along Sunrise Highway on Long Island, burning through swaths of land and causing Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and Gov. Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency.
