Children’s hospitals in North Texas are filling up with patients experiencing respiratory illnesses. Many are overwhelmed in their labs and emergency rooms.

There is an unprecedented spike in walking pneumonia cases at hospitals and urgent care centers around the DMV.

The other respiratory infection experts are watching closely is atypical (walking) pneumonia. Dr. Michel Hirsh, Worcester’s medical director and the chief pediatric surgeon at UMass Memorial Health, said he was told by Dr. Jean-Marc Gauguet, a diagnostic radiologist at UMass Memorial, that X-rays show a lot of kids with walking pneumonia.

Respiratory illnesses are once again spiking across the U.S., with the main concerns being RSV and pneumonia, which are hitting younger Americans particularly hard. Reporter Tonya J. Powers has more.
