State lawmakers passed the ban in 2020 when President Trump in his first term escalated arrests of undocumented immigrants at state and local courts.

The Trump Administration sued New York over a law that restricts federal immigration authorities from making arrests at state courthouses, ratcheting up tensions over enforcement actions against undocumented immigrants that have sparked protests across the country.

The law bans federal immigration officials from arresting people who are coming and going from courthouses or in court for proceedings unless they have a warrant signed by a judge.

Nearly 100 people were detained overnight during protests around Lower Manhattan’s Foley Square against the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies, according to the NYPD. A total of 86 people were detained.

Another protest against federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids ended with arrests in Lower Manhattan on Wednesday. Protesters returned to the federal immigration courts for a second night of demonstrations in solidarity with the protests in Los Angeles,
