Azerbaijan, the host country of United Nations climate change conference, has called on G20 leaders to send a positive signal of their commitment to addressing climate issues, as nations struggle to reach an agreement on new financial aid targets.

Developing countries need at least $1 trillion per year by the end of the decade to cope with climate change, economists told U.N. talks in Baku, where early efforts to reach a finance deal risk being overshadowed by diplomatic rows.

"We cannot leave the task of Baku (Azerbaijan's capital) until Belem," Lula told the G20 summit underway in Rio de Janeiro, referring to the Amazonian city that will host next year's UN climate talks

With negotiations on climate finance in Baku at a standstill, leaders are turning to the G20 meeting in Brazil for a breakthrough .

Countries at the COP29 summit tried to make progress on how to raise up to $1 trillion in climate finance for the world's most vulnerable, as political tensions overshadowed the talks and Argentina on Thursday pulled its delegation from Baku.
