The United States of America, also known as the United States or America, is a country primarily located in North America. It is a federal republic of 50 states, 574 federally recognized tribal governments, 326 Indian reservations, five major island territories, various uninhabited island territories, and Washington, D.C. as its federal capital district. The 48 contiguous states border Canada to the north and Mexico to the south, with the semi-exclavic state of Alaska in the northwest and the archipelagic state of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The 574 Native tribal governments have tribal sovereignty rights. Of the major island territories, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are in the Carribean Sea while American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands are in the Pacific. The U.S. is a megadiverse country, with the world's third-largest land area and third-largest population, exceeding 340 million.
