I am planning a trip to Okefenokee Swamp early next month. Based on other reviews the Swamp Loop Drive is definitely on my to-do list, but it seems that most visitors drive the loop. Is it okay to hike/walk the loop? Note, I jog 4-5 miles everyday, so the distance is fine, but wonder if everyone takes the drive instead to avoid "close encounters" with wildlife as the alligator?

Walking is possible, but I agree with the others, it could be very hot and buggy. We saw several alligators along our drive and so you need to be alert to large wildlife. We did almost all of the hikes along the way, so you can drive in and hike (jog) pretty much anywhere you would like. There was minimal traffic when we were there in February. I'm not sure how busy it might be when you are there.
Q:
Can you still rent a small boat for the day and tour on your own?
A:
You can rent canoes and kayaks. I would recommend taking the guided motorized tour first, just to get comfortable among all the alligators and the nature interpretation is great, too.
