Thank you all very much! That is a big help for my planning.
Hi, we're planning a visit to Lake Malaren this summer and would appreciate any info you can offer re transportation. Important questions: (1) Is there any kind of ferry service or bus/train service that links the towns together? (2) Is the lake water warm enough for children to swim in in late June or early July? (3) Is it possible to rent a house (we have 4 adults, 2 children)? We've tried AirB&B and cannot find many options? Is there a good website to use to find accommodations (other than a hotel).

(1) Yes, ferry service runs but check to make sure it connects the points you want (2) Not really, the water is cold (Northern Europe is like that) but locals and other Northern Europeans can brave the temps (3) We went the hotel route so no help from us here
pls recommend kids friendly hotels with good views of the lake.

Malardrotningen Hotel /Yacht would be fun for kids, although cabins are small and you would need multiple cabins if you have more than two people in your party.
Are there inland tours on this lake and how far is it to the end of the lake ? Are there any places worth visiting along the shores inland as castles or villages ? Boat rentals ? Winter sports ?

Boats sail frequently to Drottingholm, home to the Swedish royal family, as well as pretty Mariefred, an enchanting little town on the lake’s southern shore with a magnificent castle. Sweden’s main settlement during the ninth and tenth centuries, Birka, an island in Mälaren accessed by boat from Stockholm, is great if you are interested in Sweden’s stirring Viking past. The main city on the lake is Västerås, a modern and thoroughly enjoyable place with good sandy beaches and some impressive Viking remains if you like that kind of things. I didnt go there but everyone said it is nice. You should be able to find a lot of tours. Prices are from SEK 195 (for the royal palace only) up to SEK260 for several stops tours. Regarding winter sports, i havent seen any. Summer time is fun all around. Hope it helps ;)
How would I get there (Lake Malaren) from Stockholm?

Hi Jenny, Boat trips leave from central Stockholm. We got the Under the Bridges of Stockholm boat tour from Nybrohamnen. It's a convenient place to get the boat as there is a cafe opposite on Strandvagen where you can take refreshments while you wait for the departure time. Roger.
