I visited the park last year and fell in love with it's isolation and stark beauty. This year we're back to photograph the night sky as this location is one of the darkest areas in the lower 48 Unite… Full review by runner24

Far away from the rest of the world and wonderful. Starlit skies, incredible hikes with hardly another soul, no predators to worry about (for the most part), caves and lakes and meadows. Did I mentio… Full review by JimalV

We just had a few hours to visit here on the way to Capitol Reef NP. We were pleasantly surprised to find the 'Scenic Drive' which goes up the side of the highest peak in the area, Mt Wheeler. View… Full review by K B
Hello! Looking for any recommendations on good sunrise or sunset spots at Great Basin. I probably don’t want to hike super far with a headlamp. Anything a mile or less or something directly on the road would be perfect. Any suggestions would be super helpful as I’m not too familiar with the area. Thanks!

As the previous person has said, the orientation of the park on the east side of the mountain makes sunrise better than sunset if you don't want to walk far. Some of these would be pull overs on Wheeler Peak Summit Drive. However, the parking lot and area around the Lehman Caves VC would be great for sunset as anywhere that has elevation looking across Snake Valley would work. Sunset may not be the best for the park. However, just take Hwy 50 west over the gap and you will find pull overs to see the wind turbines in that wind field. Great thing about the Great Basin is all you have to do is position yourself on one side of a valley to see the sun set or rise on the other. If you don't like one valley, you can always choose the next.
We are tent camping the end of June in the Great Basin area to enjoy the dark skies. We have reservations at Grey Cliffs, but noticed that there is no potable water. Wondering if there is a local camping area that takes reservations that others would recommend.

We stayed at the Whispering Elms where there is a small motel, an RV Park and tent camping. It's in Baker NV, just outside of the park. At a lower elevation than the Great Basin Campgrounds, it will be warmer, which may or may not be good for you. Whispering Elms had a "shower house", so there's water. By the way, if you don't know about Crystal Ball Cave, about 45 minutes from Baker, near Gandy, Utah, you may want to check it out. We went to both Lehman Caves and Crystal Ball Cave in the same trip and enjoyed them equally, even though they are very different. The family that manages Crystal Ball Cave has cabins for rent--maybe camping opportunities too.

We stayed in Baker at a quite interesting place. It will be hot in the summer, there’s no two ways around that, but there were a lot of trees there. It was called whispering Elms. Nothing fancy but I actually liked it a lot.
Can I safe to drive a Sienna mini van (no Wheel drive, or AWD) to Lehman cave next week, Oct. 18? Thanks.
