Road access may be closed during the wet season (usually October to April). Dating has shown that the meteorite crashed to Earth around 300,000 years ago. It would have weighed more than 50,000 tonnes and is thought to have been travelling at 15 kilometres a second, a speed that would have taken it across Australia in five minutes. The Wolfe Creek meteorite crater was only discovered by Europeans during an aerial survey in 1947. However, it has long been known to Aboriginal people, who called it Kandimalal, and tell of two rainbow snakes who formed the nearby Sturt and Wolfe Creeks as they crossed the desert. The crater is believed to be the place where one snake emerged from the ground.

we um’d and ah’d about whether we were going to attempt the drive to the crater in a 2WD. Majority of what we had seen online had said the road was too rough and that it was recommended as 4WD only. … Full review by livjacobsonn

Hi. The distance to the Crater along the Tanami from the main road was about 125ks. The road when we traveled in May was a hard surface dirt road and the speed we sat on was around 70 KPH. We could have gone faster but best so keep it down as Pot holes covered in soft dust can appear quickly. About 12ks from the Crater we turned off the Tanimi and after opening and closing about 3 gates we arrived. The flies were bad and I mean BAD so a fly net is recommended. I used repentant (Bushmans) and was no good whats so ever. The camp site there is good and plenty of room. They have a drop toilet also. Last thing is the Stars at night. Spectacular.

Hi Rhonda, Wolfe Creek Crater has a well laid out camping area with large individual sites, drop toilets, and only a reasonably short walk to the crater. We loved it there and it had one of the best sunsets of our trip. It is a free camp, but you are not allowed fires. If you mean to camp where Wolfe Creek 'crosses' the road, we didn't notice any place to camp, and I would believe you would be very exposed.

Hi, Cate. The Western Australia Parks and Wildlife internet site is not clear on this, but it is possible to click on their "Dogs Allowed?" reference of the "Go Forest" part of their website and it may give you the answer. They do warn, however, that leashes may be required because of their widespread use of the poison bait 1080 in park areas to protect endangered species and kill introduced feral pests. I was unable to access the "Dogs Allowed?" menu, but you may have better luck!
