We are looking to stay in the area that has the most shops, restaurants & bars within walking distance. Is that the Waterfront? I noticed that there weren't many hotels in that area. Thank you for your help!

yes that is the best area to stay if you wish to enjoy old town Alex. the embassy suites is a 10 minute walk down king street to the waterfront

Yes. You can take a train to Alexandria. At the Alexandria station, you can get the FREE trolley that will take you up and down King Street. It’s really convenient. When you arrive at the Alexandria station, you will have to take a very short walk down the hill to the metro stop to get to the trolly stop.
We will be staying in Crystal City (about 20 minutes from Old Town). We will not have a car. Is it worth it to pay for transportation to go there? Looking for things to do at night after sightseeing in DC. We will be there Sunday-through Tuesday in the summer.

Yes take Metro. If you don't have one, you will need to buy a one time $5 metrorail farecard, in addition to loading money on it. Keep farecard for future visits. Well worth it.
