Rented a side by side in Red River for 4 hours. If you want to spend anytime at all at Goose Lake, you will use up the 4 hour rental very easily. It is a doable rough road with lots of rocks, you j… Full review by Ricky R

A long, steep bumpy trail led us to a beautiful view of goose lake hidden in the mountains above Red River. WORTH IT! Full review by rvsrfun

Most beautiful lake I've been to in New Mexico. Only downside is access. However that's what keeps this hidden gem exactly that, a hidden gem. Full review by LTLaker24

Generally ATV. Could hike it. Would double check the mileage but think 6 miles up and then straight back down on The road. The beauty of the ATV is u can stop couple places to see old log cabin, old hard rock gold mining and can even pan for gold in the stream. Can also do the trail in a jeep. First part of trail requires crossing a stream.

I would not feel comfortable going up in a 2500 ram pickup. The road is too narrow and getting more narrow. If you met another vehicle it could be very dangerous. We have gone up in a Jeep Wrangler the last 3 years. The road is not maintained. I would rent a ATV if you want to go to Goose Lake.

I wouldn't try it. I rented a jeep to take out on all the other trails, they wouldn't let us go up Goose because of the condition of the trail. I didn't need 4 wheel drive on most of the other trails, but it was nice to know I had it if (and when) I needed it. I doubt you can even drive a 2 wheel drive through the river (which is the start of the trail). I would recommend Red River Mountain Adventure to rent an UTV to go up or book a tour with New Mexico Adventure Company. We personally booked the tour and thoroughly enjoyed it, every last bump!
About how long is the hike up? I know that would depend on the person, but for a couple of middle aged people who are adequately in shape - can you give me an estimate?

I really cannot recommend hiking the trail. If you are an avid hiker, I would guess at least 3 to 4 hours to get to the lake from the highway. We were in the jeep, and since the trail was as rough as it is, it took us approximately an hour and a half to get to the top. About an hour to get down.
