On the day of my visit we arrived before the house was open and we were able to park on the grounds and walk around the gardens. There were people walking their dogs there also. Went we went into the courtyard we saw at girl at a desk and she then took payment for the tour around the house. She said something about there was meant to be someone in the hut on driveway taking this money instead of her. However it is my belief that it is £5 for gardens & house but as I have already mentioned there was no one stopping us from walking around the gardens, the courtyard etc. This may not be very clear but I wasn't sure I was clear about when she meant but that is my experience and what I noted happening. Hope this helps.
