Within the United States are 574 federally recognized tribal governments and 326 Indian reservations, which are legally defined as domestic dependent nations possessing tribal sovereignty rights. The U.S. asserts sovereignty over five major island territories and various uninhabited islands. It is a megadiverse country, with the world's third-largest land area and third-largest population, exceeding 340 million.
